I will be presenting CwiC sessions on Monday, June 24,at the Anja S. Greer Math, Science, Technology Conference, in Exeter, NH. Although I won’t be there offering my week-long courses for personal reasons this year, I had some time to be there for a day to at least share some thoughts about PBL and journaling. Hope to see some of you there.

Metacognitive Jouraling: Lessons from 20 years of Student Writing
My talk at this conference will be something I have been looking forward to discussing for many years. I will be taking over 20 years of journals that students have written for me and doing a qualitative study on the writings. Hopefully, I will find some interesting things that I have learned about student writing in mathematics. Hope to see you there.

PBL Mathematics from a Thematic Perspective.” There are many way of viewing PBL in math right now and I’m goig to speak about how to take problems and teach a topic by using scaffolded problems that have the same theme. My talk this year is entitled Mentoring Each Other: Teaching Teachers to Teach with PBL and I’m speaking with two other colleagues – Miriam Singer of the Kent Denver School and Kristen McVaugh of Deerfield Academy. These two exceptional young teachers who I have had the pleasure of mentoring in the past 3 years and we will talk about the experience of teaching and learning to teach with PBL methods. We hope that many people come to see the talk and especially teacher educators who might want to bring some of the experiences back to their education classrooms.

PBL Math Teaching Summit July 16-19, 2015 at Deerfield Academy
PBL Teaching Summit (click link for more details) for a three-day weekend in July (location in western Massachusetts). My hope is to gather teachers who currently use Problem-Based or Inquiry-Based Curricula from all over the U.S. together to discuss current topics, trends and concerns and facilitate workshops and conversations. My talk is entitled Assessing PBL: Relating Student Work to the Practice Standards and my hope is to present many different methods of assessment and connect them to the CCSS Practice Standard to show how PBL relates to the Common Core.

I have two courses running this year at the MST conference in Exeter and I hope to offer some CwiC sessions that are focused on PBL and assessment and journal writing again. This conference is the week of June 23-38 and is always a great professional experience for me.

My proposal was accepted at AERA this year to present my finding from my dissertation research. I’m very excited to be going to AERA this year and still working on editing the final draft of the paper for submission in March.

I am going to be presenting on my dissertation work at the NCTM conference this year. I’ve changed the workshop a bit in order to focus more on teachers and to show them how the research results showed outcomes of how different girls reacted to the PBL relational classroom. I am honored to be presenting at this conference once again.
Teaching Contemporary Math Conference, North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, January 24-25, 2014
I will be doing 2 workshops on Saturday morning on “PBL Pedagogy for BC Calculus Today” My plan is for this workshop to really focus on using PBL (what is it? how does the class work?) in relation to the concepts and topics of BC Calculus. Does it really work in an AP course? Can you really get through the curriculum and not teach to the test? I am very excited about going to this conference in January.
PME-NA 2013, Chicago, IL November 14-17
I will present my paper on my dissertation research which I entitled, ‘Relational Problem-Based Learning: Adolescent Girls’ Experiences with an Inclusive Pedagogy for Mathematics.’ This is a wonderful conference for mathematics education researchers – totally invigorating and motivating for me last year. I can’t wait.
Anja S. Greer Conference on Mathematics, Science and Technology
For another summer my PBL course Moving Forward with Problem-Based Learning will run at the Anja S. Greer Conference on Mathematics, Science and Technology at Phillips Exeter Academy. However, for the first time, I am offering a course called “Scaffolding and Developing a PBL Course” which still has space in it. This is for teachers whose schools are already using a PBL Curriculum and would like to learn how to align it more with their audience and syllabus. check out the full course description for both at the conference website. One is a research session in which I will be presenting on the discourse research that I did last fall. The other will be an information session in which I will be presenting with my colleague Sunshine Greene from Emma Willard on the Problem-Based Curriculum innovations that we have made to our geometry curriculum at our school.
