Consulting/Testimonials

Many schools have benefited from my input and expertise with respect to reform and constructivist mathematics education approaches. Perhaps a day-long observational visit in which I come to your school and give feedback on your current classroom practices would be beneficial. Other options include full department professional development days or workshops in which a specific topic is discussed or facilitated in a way that works best for your faculty’s needs. My pedagogical philsophies of mathematics education are always a part of my professional development seminars, so discussion and activities, as well as rubrics and models, are a big part of the work. Feel free to contact me about any type of consulting assistance you feel may be helpful.

Comments from past PBL workshop participants:

“Thank you for providing me with one of the best professional development experiences in my teaching career of thirty years and above all for encouraging all of us to challenge our ideas and practices in regards to teaching mathematics.  Experiences such as these are invaluable as I continue to strive to find opportunities to grow as an experienced teacher and to observe the remarkable efforts of colleagues interested in exploring different approaches.  How lucky that teachers at the start of their journey or in their formative years have the opportunity to be mentored and influenced by you.  Both the jam sessions and the many discussions with other teachers at different stages of their journey were indicative of your efforts in fostering a growth mindset amongst teachers.”  PBL Summit participant 2016

“I took a 16 week, 3-credit graduate course in PBL as part of my MSEd program. However, it was very theory-based with very little in the way of practical guidelines which made implementation difficult. I learned more that I will be able to use in this 10-hour course than in the 32 hours I spent in graduate school.” of my PBL course at the Anja S. Greer Conference on Mathematics, Science and Technology at Exeter every June)

“Attending the Exeter conference in 2009 and meeting [Carmel] inspired me to dig into PBL and find ways to make it my own. I can honestly say that it was one of the most formative events of my career.  I was so looking forward to seeing [Carmel] there and moving on to the next phase of my PBL practice.” Janet Cowan, Past Department Chair at Applewild School

“Carmel was an engaging and informative instructor who did an excellent job striking a balance between presenting us with information and allowing us to voice our own thoughts and perspectives.” past participant in PBL workshop

“Carmel’s passion and innovative classroom teaching always inspire me to move forward to become a better teacher! Thank you very much.” past participant in PBL workshop

Comments from Schools who have benefited from independent Consulting:

“The team has not stopped talking about all of the ideas you inspired.  In my seven years as department head it was by far the best use of PD funds and has done the most to foster relationships amongst the team.  I am so excited to see where they take this next.”
